Because most cellphones nowadays are made of metal or glass, keeping them secure and free of harm may be tough. Even if you don't want to hide the phone's gorgeous design, a nice case or cover will go a long way. However, in certain situations, it is possible to add some style points to it as well. There is a case for everyone, from the ultra-slim to the incredibly tough.

If you're seeking to buy a phone cover, you might be wondering what kinds of phone cases are available or which phone case companies you should trust. In this case buyer's guide, we will try our best to address these issues while also highlighting some of the top smartphone case makers on the market.

What materials are phone covers made of?

Polymers such as thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), polycarbonate (PC), and silicone are commonly used to make phone covers. TPU is the most commonly used material because it provides the best blend of weight, flexibility, and durability.

To add bumpers and other protective features to a case, more rigid polymers like as PC are frequently utilized in combination with TPU. These casings also include a variety of design alternatives, such as transparent finishes and a variety of color selections.

Silicone is ideal for phone covers due to its flexibility, durability, and soft rubbery texture. It is less likely to break than TPU or PC, because it is often thinner and lighter. They also come in a variety of colors, but because of their rubbery feel, they are considerably more difficult to clean.

Phone covers contain TPU, PC, silicone, bioplastics, and premium materials such as leather and wood.

Leather can also be featured in cute phone cases, although usually as part of a hybrid design. This implies that the inside of the case is TPU, while the exterior is covered in a thin layer of leather. These casings are lovely and develop a patina with time, but the thin leather covering is easily destroyed. Keep this in mind before making a purchase.

In recent years, we've also seen more ecologically friendly materials utilized in cases, such as biodegradable plastic and even wood. These are less durable than polymers and frequently last for a shorter time. However, most individuals will replace their phones every few years, and when they do, the plastic cover will be discarded. This is a strategy to reduce your environmental impact.

What should I look for in a phone case?

One of the first important selections you must make is the sort of phone case you wish to purchase. We're pleased to inform you that you now have a plethora of possibilities. Here's a short recap:

Thin cases: these provide trade protection while being stylish and simple. They add minimal heft to the phone but provide little drop protection or other functions.

Hybrid cases: these are the "standard" cases that you see at most shops, and they come in a wide range of designs. These are the cute phone cases that most people should purchase.

Robust cases: thick and heavy, rugged cases provide maximum drop protection at the sacrifice of design refinements. They frequently incorporate additions like kickstands and waterproofing.

Clear cases: Clear cases are transparent and simple, allowing you to show off your phone's design while protecting it from drops. Just bear in mind that they might be tough to clean.

Wallet cases: Wallet cases allow you to secure your phone while storing cards, IDs, or cash. Aside from cardholder cases, there are also folio-style cute phone cases with a screen protector.

Magnetic cases: These are intended to be used with magnetic accessories such as Apple's MagSafe ecosystem. There aren't many alternatives, and they're very specialized, but they can open up some intriguing possibilities.

Battery cases: While too large for daily usage, cases with built-in battery packs are ideal for camping or lengthy vacations. They frequently include reverse-wireless charging for other accessories as well.

Waterproof cases: Most flagship phones now have some level of water protection, but none of them can withstand saltwater. These uncommon and specialized circumstances exist to fill that void.

Skins: Skins aren't technically cases, although they frequently accomplish the similar function. However, they provide very little protection because they just adhere to your phone with adhesive, much like a sticker.

Thin and hybrid casings are ideal for the majority of individuals. They provide an excellent balance of protection and flair, often without breaking the budget. Furthermore, there are so many different styles and colors to select from (including clear covers) that you're bound to discover one that matches your personality. Some companies even allow you to personalize the cover with inscriptions or other graphics.

You have even more options if you want a little more utility out of your case. Wallets and magnetic cases are useful for regular use, while more specialized solutions, such as battery cases, might be useful in particular scenarios. If you work in the outdoors (or are simply clumsy), robust cases often provide military-grade protection, avoiding serious damage from drops of up to 20 feet.

How to keep your phone looking good inside a case

A quality phone case adds grip, style, and color; it protects my handset even as it shows off the craftsmanship of the device. And a good case doesn't necessarily mean shelling out for an Otterbox or a Trident. A good case is a case that offers the right mix of protection, comfort, grip, and style for the user's situation. Regardless of which case you own, be it a Spigen Neo Hybrid case, a Cruzerlite Bugdroid TPU case, or something in between, I've got news for you:

You buy a shiny, new phone that's worth a good bit of money. You want to protect that shiny new phone, so you buy it a case. That case is supposed to help defend it against drops, dings, and dirt, right? Well, not quite.

Unless you've got a LifeProof or other case made to keep out EVERYTHING (water, dust, sand, poltergeists, etc), your phone probably still has just enough wiggle room to allow gunk to slip in between the case and your phone. Since the debris can't easily escape, that sand or dust is just going to rub, scratch, and otherwise shift about in its confined quarters until you take the case off and liberate it.

The problem is, most people don't regularly take their cases off. That bit of sand from your beach vacation last year might still be there, scratching wee little tick marks on the back of your fancy phone as it waits for freedom. So, after two years, the case finally comes off, but lo and behold, your once pristine phone is now scratched, scuffed, and maybe even stained by the case that was supposed to protect it.

We all want to properly care for our precious, precious phones, so that they last longer, look better, and will hopefully fetch more when we inevitably sell them and buy a new one. Here are a few tips for keeping your case from wrecking your phone.

Take your phone out of the case regularly. If you're someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, keep your phone in a purse or bag with a lot of other stuff. If you just want to be careful, take your case off once a week to clean it. If you're using a case that's hard to take on and off (which should hopefully get less dirt in it), then do it once a month. If you're lazy/forgetful, do it every time you get your oil changed.

Use a microfiber cloth to clean it. If your phone is dirty, you might have an urge to use an alcoholic or Lysol wipe on your phone. STOP. They can eat away at the oleophobic coating on your screen. Don't even use a paper towel if you can help it. You should use a microfiber cloth to gently wipe off smudges and specks. Use the hem of your shirt in a pinch, and if you have tough gunk or sticky stuff on it, put just a little water on the cloth (not on the phone, on the cloth), and gently work out the spots.

Use Q-Tips to clean ports and seams. While sometimes you might also need to bust out a toothpick to dig out harder-to-reach grime, always start with a Q-Tip and remember that if you dig too hard, you could scratch or pop something. Like your microphone. which would be bad.

Wash your case. While we wouldn't recommend washing your phone, you can wash most cute phone cases with a light dish soap solution. Considering how many places we set our phones (dirty counters, public bathrooms, etc.), you should consider washing your case once in a while and then letting it air-dry for a few hours before putting it back on your phone. While you can get most of the water off the surface of the case, letting it air-dry will allow more time for any water that might've seeped into the softer, squishier parts of your case to air themselves out, and it'll give you plenty of time to.

Let your phone breathe. After cleaning your phone and your case, just give your phone a little time away from its confines. Let it breathe. If you're cleaning it at night, just let it sit out overnight before re-assembling its case in the morning.
